Live Roulette – Endless Betting Opportunities
Whether you are playing European Roulette, French Roulette, American Roulette, or one of the slightly more unusual variants on offer, you will find that there are almost limitless betting options.
In all versions of the games, the basic bets are split into two groups, outside bets and inside bets.
Outside Bets
These are the bets that are placed by putting chips on the perimeter of the main Roulette betting area.
- Red/Black Bet: This is simply a bet on either all the red numbers or all the black numbers on the roulette wheel. Place the chips in either the red or the black square on the betting area. In nearly every game the bet pays at 1:1
- Odd/Even Bet: This is a bet on either all the odd or all the even numbers on the wheel. Place the chips in the area marked ‘Even’ or ‘Odd’ on the betting area. It normally pays at 1:1
- Low/High (1 to 18/19 to 36) Bet: This bet may be labelled slightly differently in each game. It is a bet on a group of 18 numbers. The numbers 1 – 18 are Low and the numbers 19 – 36 are High. Place the chips in the boxes marked ‘1 to 18’ / ’Low’ or ’19 to 36’ / ’High’ in the betting area. It usually pays at 1:1
- Column Bet: This is a bet on the ball landing on a number within one of the three columns of twelve numbers that run along the longest side of the betting area. Column 1 covers 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31, and 34. Column 2 covers 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23, 26, 29, 32, and 35. Column 3 covers 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, and 36. Each column usually pays at 2:1.
- Dozen Bet: This is a bet that covers a group of twelve numbers, 1 – 12, 13 – 24 or 25 – 36. To bet on all the numbers in one group place the chips in one of the boxes labelled ‘1st 12’, ‘2nd 12’ or ‘3rd 12’. The bet usually pays at 2:1.
Inside Bets
Inside bets are those when chips are placed within the boundaries of the main betting area.
- Straight Up: This is a bet on an individual number. The chips should be placed directly on the number on the betting area. It usually pays at 35:1.
- Split Bet: This is a bet on two numbers that are next to each another on the betting area. The chips should be placed on the line that separates the two numbers, for example on the line between 27 and 30. It usually pays at 17:1
- Street Bet: The betting area consists of twelve rows of three numbers known as ‘Streets’. To bet on a group of three numbers, the chips should be placed on the lower edge of the street. For instance, to place a street bet on 7, 8 and 9 the chips should be placed on the outer line on the number 7. Bets on 0, 1 and 2 or 0, 2 and 3 are special street bets and the chips should be placed on the ‘T’ section dividing the three numbers. The bets usually pay at 11:1
- Corner Bet: This is a bet on four numbers whose corners meet on the betting area so that the four numbers form a square. For example 2, 3, 5 and 6. The chips should be placed at the corner where all four numbers meet. It usually pays at 8:1
- Line Bet: This is a bet on two adjacent streets, a total of six numbers. Place the chips on the lower edge of the betting area at the ‘T’ section where the two streets meet. It usually pays at 5:1.
- Five-Number Bet: This is only available in American Roulette. It is a bet on the numbers 0, 00, 1, 2, and 3. It usually pays at 6:1.
- Basket Bet: This is a bet on the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3 and it usually pays at 6:1.
- Snake Bet: In some roulette games, you will find a shortcut to place this bet. It forms a snake like pattern across the betting area covering the numbers 1, 5, 9, 12, 14, 16, 19, 23, 27, 30, 32, and 34. It will usually pay at 2:1.
Call Bets
Also known as announced bets, these bets are only available in European and French Roulette tables. They are in fact betting patterns made up of a collection of the Inside Bets explained above. In most Roulette games, you will find shortcut buttons so that you can place these bets quickly and easily.
- Voisins du Zero: Translated from French, this means ‘Neighbours of Zero’ and it is a bet on the numbers that neighbour 0 on the Roulette wheel. Looking at the wheel, this bet covers the 17 numbers from 22 clockwise to 25, almost half of the wheel. The bet takes nine chips to place: a split bet on each of 4/7, 12/15, 18/21, 19/22 and 32/35, two chips on the triplet 0/2/3 and two chips on the corner bet 25/29.
- Jeu Zero: This means ‘Zero Game’ and it also refers to the numbers closest to zero. All the numbers covered by this bet are also in the Voisins, but they are placed differently. It covers the numbers 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32 and 15. The bet requires four chips to place: a straight up bet on 26 and split bets on 0/3, 12/15 and 32/35.
- Tiers du Cylindre: This means ‘Third of the Wheel’ and it is a bet on an exact third of the wheel, the numbers in the third opposite 0. The bet requires six chips, each one placed on a different split bet: 5/8, 10/11, 13/16, 23/24, 27/30 and 33/36.
- Orphelins: This means ‘Orphans’ and it is a bet on the numbers that aren’t included in either a Tiers du Cylindre or a Voisins du Zero bet. The bet covers 8 numbers and requires 5 chips. One chip is placed on the number 1 and one on each of the following splits: 6/9, 14/17, 17/20 and 31/34.
- Neighbours: This is a bet on a number and the two numbers either side of it on the roulette wheel. The bet requires five chips and they are all placed as straight bets. For instance a neighbours bet on 10 would place a chip on 5, 8, 10, 23 and 24. In some games, you can extend the Neighbours bet to more than two numbers on either side, and this of course requires more chips.
- Final Bet: This is a bet on all the numbers that have the same last number. For example, a final bet on the number 5 would place chips on 5, 15, 25 and 35.
This can be slightly confusing at first, but it is really worth taking the time to familiarise yourself with all of the different types of bet. That way, you can begin to build betting strategies that utilise them to cover the wheel in various different ways.
Live Blackjack – Side Betting Action
There are not many types of bet in Blackjack. As players will know, you place your first bet at the start of the round, and from that point onwards, any further bets are optional. However, the game does offer players the chance to place a number of side bets, and these can make each round even more exciting.
The most commonly found side bet is Insurance. This bet is offered if the dealer’s up card is an Ace. It is a bet players can use to protect themselves from the dealer having Blackjack. The bet costs half of the original stake and if the dealer does have Blackjack, then it pays at 2:1, ensuring the player does not lose any money.
Another very common side bet is Perfect Pairs. Often it is offered as Player’s Perfect Pair and Dealer’s Perfect Pair. The Player’s Perfect Pair bet wins if the first two player’s cards in a hand form a Perfect Pair, Coloured Pair, or a Red/Black Pair. The Dealer’s Perfect Pair side bet wins if the dealer’s first two cards forms one of these pairs. The types of pairs are as follows:
- A Perfect Pair is two identical cards and this usually pays around 25:1
- A Coloured Pair is two cards of the same value and colour but different suits, and it usually pays around 12:1.
- A Mixed Pair is two cards of the same value but different colour and suits and it usually pays around 6:1.
Many games give you the chance to place the 21+3 side bet. This is a bet on the player’s first two cards and the dealer’s up card forming a poker hand:
- A Flush (all cards from the same suit) usually pays 5:1
- A Straight (a set of consecutive cards) usually pays 10:1
- A Three of a Kind (three identical cards from different suits) usually pays 30:1
- A Straight Flush (three consecutive cards from the same suit) usually pays 40:1
- Suited Triple (three identical cards of the same suit) usually pays 100:1
Some Blackjack games are linked to progressive jackpots and these can be hugely exciting. To win the jackpot you will have to place a side bet and usually the jackpot is won by being dealt four consecutive aces from the same suit. Sometimes there will be smaller payouts available for lesser hands. For instance, three consecutive suited aces may pay 5000:1, four unsuited aces may pay 2500:1, three unsuited aces may pay 25:1, two suited aces may pay 100:1, two unsuited aces may pay 50:1, and one ace may pay 5:1.
Occasionally you may be able to place a bet on the dealer going bust, the Buster side bet. The more cards that the dealer is holding, the more the bet will pay. For example, it might pay 2:1 if the dealer has three or four cards, 4:1 for five cards, 18:1 for six cards, 50:1 for seven cards, and 250:1 with eight or more cards. In some versions, there are boosted payouts if the player is holding Blackjack. For instance, if the player has Blackjack and the dealer goes bust with seven cards it may pay 800:1 and if the player has Blackjack and the dealer goes bust with eight or more cards, it may pay 2000:1.
