The Rules of American Roulette
The goal of American roulette is to predict in which of the 38 slots on the roulette wheel the ball will land. The wheel has 36 numbers ranging from 1 to 36, with each featuring a red or black color. The other two slots are for 0 and 00, the two green numbers at the end of the table.
The wheel is situated next to a betting area that includes multiple spaces where you can lay down your chips. You can place a bet on an individual number or one of many outside bets that cover various outcomes.
A round of American roulette will work like this:
- The players will place their chips on different spots on the table.
- The dealer will spin the roulette wheel and add the ball to it after everyone places his or her bets.
- The ball will eventually land on one of the numbers.
- Whoever correctly picked the number that it lands on will win, with each player earning a payout based on the type of wager they place.
- The dealer then clears the table after everyone is paid out, allowing people to start betting on a new round.
Roulette Bets and Payouts
Inside Bets
Inside bets are wagers where you will place a bet on individual numbers. You will place your chips on either a single number or multiple numbers on the inside part of the betting table.
Here are the types of inside bets you can place and their payouts:
- Straight - A straight bet entails betting on a single number. It offers the most valuable payout on the table at 35:1.
- Split - A split bet is when you place a wager on two adjacent numbers. For example, you can place a bet that the ball will land on a 7 or 10, or you could bet on the ball landing on 7 or 8. You can also place a bet on 0 and 00 as your split pick, or you could place a 0-1, 0-2. 00-2., or 00-3 wager. This pick offers a 17:1 payout.
- Street - A street bet is when you place a bet on three numbers in the same row. There are twelve streets on the table from 1-3 to 34-36, plus there are three streets in the green numbers in 0-1-2, 0-00-2, and 00-2-3. The street bet has an 11:1 payout.
- Corner - A corner bet covers four numbers connected together in a block. There are 22 corner bets available from 1-2-4-5 to 32-33-35-36. A corner wager has an 8:1 payout.
- Six-Line - A six-line wager covers all six numbers in two streets connected to each other. There are eleven different six-line bets you can place ranging from 1-6 to 31-36. This wager has a 5:1 payout.
- Basket - The basket bet involves betting on the 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3 spot on the top of the table. You will get a 6:1 payout if the ball lands on any of these five spots.
Outside Bets
An outside bet is when you bet on multiple numbers at a time based on certain characteristics. Outside bets do not have high payouts like the inside ones, but they cover more numbers and give you a better chance of winning.
Here are the outside bets you can place on an American roulette table:
- Red/Black - You can get on the resulting number being either a red or black one. This wager has an even money payout at 1:1.
- High/Low - You can also bet on the ball being a high number from 19-36 or a low number from 1-18. This wager also offers a 1:1 payout.
- Odd/Even - The number outside bet covers whether the number will be an odd or even number and includes a 1:1 payout.
- Dozen - A dozen wager covers the first, second, or third dozen on the board. You can place a bet on the 1-12, 13-24, or 25-36 spot for a 2:1 payout.
- Column - A column wager covers all twelve numbers on one of the three columns. For example, you can bet on a column that includes 1, 4, 7, 10, and so forth until the end at 34. The wager has a 2:1 payout.
What Makes American Roulette Different?
American roulette is different from European Roulette in many ways:
- American Roulette has two green numbers, while the European roulette game has one.
- The number wheels have different layouts in these two games. The American roulette table has the green numbers on opposite ends of the wheel. Individual numbers also appear on different spots on the wheel. For example, the first five numbers on the American roulette table after 0 are 28, 9, 26, 30, and 11, while the first five for the European wheel are 32, 15, 19, 4, and 21.
- You will lose your even money bet in American roulette if the resulting number is green. A European roulette player's even money wager will be pushed over to the next round if the number is green.
- The house has a 5.26% advantage in American roulette, while the edge for European roulette is 2.7%.
