A 5-Minute Guide to Classic Roulette

Let’s face it, there's something almost iconic about this enduring casino game. From the spinning gilded wheel to the tiny bouncing ivory ball, there's a moment of nail-biting tension and anxious trepidation as gamblers hold their breath and cross their fingers, waiting to see into which Maplewood pocket the ball finally comes to rest.

For those who really love the game of roulette, it’s name is synonymous with the glitz and glamour of the Hollywood casino. Because of this, many people assume James Bond to be the ultimate roulette player. Unfortunately, his game of choice was baccarat. You need to travel back to 1942, to a Casablanca filmed in black and white, with Humphrey Bogart helping a couple of lovers cheat at the roulette table, to see a real roulette homage.

Classic Roulette Rules and How to Play

Due to the fact that it's incredibly easy to play, you'll find that Classic Roulette is one of the most sought-after casino games on the whole gaming floor. When compared to other table games such as blackjack or baccarat, there are no complicated rules to follow or arduous strategies needed. This means that a novice approaching the roulette table for the first time has exactly the same chances of winning as a veteran player.

The Table Layout

If we take an overview of the roulette table, we can see that it's made up of two parts; the betting board/felt and the wheel. The felt is where you place both your bets and by default, your chips. Yet it's the Mahogany wheel that’s the heart of the game. It takes centre stage as it determines the results of every round. Take note that there are two types of wheel; the American and European. The former is partitioned into 38 pockets with both a double zero and a single zero. In contrast, the European wheel features 37 pockets with just a single zero. It goes without saying that the European wheel offers much better odds, and therefore, winning possibilities.

How to Play Classic Roulette

You won't be able to take part in the game unless you have a stack of casino chips at your elbow. In many casinos, different colours will denote differing monetary values. Before the rounds begins, you need to place a bet on the felt. This doesn't just have to be a single wager, as you are able to have multiple bets in any single round. By doing so, it's possible to increase your winning chances.

In a brick and mortar casino, it's the dealer’s job to spin the wheel and then drop the ivory ball onto it. If you're playing online, at a casino like Plaza Royal, simply tap the spin button after placing your wagers. Essentially, you're speculating on the pocket number the ball will finally come to rest in.

There are a huge number of possible bets available in a game of Classic Roulette. So there's no need to simply wager on a specific pocket or number. As the pockets have alternating colours of red and black, you can choose either one as a single bet. Likewise, you can predict that the ball will stop on an odd or even number. Once the winning result has been obtained, the winning players are paid out, with the house collecting all losing bets. With the round complete, another begins with the same procedure being repeated. As we previously said, the gameplay is very simple.

The Different Types of Classic Roulette Bets

We previously alluded to the fact that there are multiple bets available in a game of Classic Roulette. Each one of these wagers will have its own unique layouts and odds. Generally speaking the bets in roulette fall into two categories: outside and inside bets.

Inside Bets

Inside bets are placed by laying your chips on the inner segments of the betting area. On the whole, inside bets offer higher payouts, though the chances of winning are much lower. There are six types of inside bet. Let's have a look at each one of them in turn.

Straight Up

Here you’re simply betting on a single number. Place your chips over the desired number and if the ball happens to land on that digit, then you win.

Split

With a Split Bet, you’re going to wager on two adjacent numbers. The way to do this is by placing your chips on the line that separates both numbers on the betting area. You’ll win if the ball drops onto either of these two numbers.

Street

This also goes by the name of Trio Bet. As you probably guessed, it's a bet on three numbers in a vertical line. Once again, you’ll win if the ball stops on any of these three numbers.

Corner

You can bet on the numbers that form a square on the felt. For this you need to position your chips at the corners of all four digits.

Basket

This is a bet on 5 specific digits. Namely, the 0, 00, 1, 2, and 3. Place the betting chips on the line between a 0 and the 1. This is only available in American Roulette.

Line

Place two bets on 6 numbers by placing your bets on adjacent streets. This gives you two Street Bets.

Outside Bets

As you probably guessed, outside bets are the reverse of inside bets. A such, they are placed on the outer segment of the betting area. The winning possibilities of these bets is going to be higher from those offered by inside bets, though the winning amounts will be lower. There are 5 types of outside bet.

Black/Red

This is probably one of the most popular bets at the roulette table. Simply place your chips on the red or black section of the felt. Technically this is a 50/50 bet and it offers one of the best odds in the whole casino.

Even/Odd

With the same odds as the above, you choose if the ball will come to rest on an odd or even number. If for example, you choose even, then any number that the ball falls onto which happens to be an even number is a win.

High/Low

For this wager, the numbers on a roulette wheel divided into 2 parts; the High (19-36) and the Low (1-18). To make the bet place your chips on the High-Low space on the felt.

Column

If you look at the bottom of the 3 columns of a roulette felt, you'll see there's “2 to 1” inscribed. Choose a column to stake a column bet. Provided the ball stops at any number on your column of choice, then you'll win.

Dozen

On the felt there are three "12" squares. To bet with your chips, place them either over the first, second, or third 12 sections. If the ball lands on any of the numbers out of your choice of 12, it’s a winner.

Classic Roulette Odds and Payouts

Take note the mechanics and rules of the game will only get you so far. It's important to understand the odds of each bet winning. Knowing the odds and payouts will help you make bets with a better possibility of landing some wins. After all, the whole point of the game is to win as much as possible, whilst at the same time, losing as little of your bankroll.

As you’ll see in the table below, the roulette payouts remain the same across the major variants of the game. However, there is a difference when it comes to the winning probabilities of each. Also, keep in mind that depending on which variant you're playing, the house edge will differ. Here is a table showing the typical payouts and probabilities for the different types of roulette games.
